How All on 4 Dental Implants Work

How Do All-on-4 Implants Work?

There may come a point in your life when you’re faced with losing all of your natural teeth.  If this is the case, you’ll be given several popular options for tooth replacement.  Traditional dentures and individual implants are quite common.  However, you may find that All-on-4 implants from our Mesa, Arizona dentist give you the best of both worlds.

What Are All-on-4 Implants?

All-on-four implants is a system that consists of strategically placing a minimum of four dental implants (sometimes six) throughout a single arch (your upper or lower jaw). Implants are securely placed within the jaw bone where they stay for decades, if not the rest of your life.

Then, an appliance that’s very similar to a dental bridge is custom-designed with a full arch of teeth. When selecting the teeth to use we consider the size, shape, and shade that will compliment your facial characteristics and complexion.

The hybrid bridge will have openings in it that align perfectly with the implants previously placed.  We’ll attach the bridge to the implants with a special attachment. Finally, we’ll cover the holes of your fixed denture bridge.

Removing Your All-on-4-Implant Denture

Once the bridge appliance is set in place, your All-on-4-implant denture is fixed permanently in your mouth. You cannot remove it. The fact that this appliance stays in place is one of the best reasons to choose All-on-4-implants as your full arch denture alternative. You won’t have to take anything out at night or worry about the changes that come with dentures.

However, your new All-on-4 bridge can still be removed by our dentist with special tools. In fact, we recommend that you come in periodically for us to take it out so that we can thoroughly clean your implants and appliance. Keeping your bridge, implants, and gums in pristine condition will help to ensure that you can enjoy your All-on-4 implants for the rest of your life. Preventing gum disease is crucial, so be sure to keep up with your home hygiene routine.

All-on-4-Implants Work Better Than Traditional Dentures

For years, traditional dentures have been the go-to full-arch tooth replacement option. However, many patients struggle to wear these appliances because of their bulky and uncomfortable design.  Thankfully, All-on-4 implants are a great alternative to the standard denture.

An upper denture stays in place the best when it forms a suction against the roof of your mouth.  Many patients lack the right amount of depth in their upper palate to hold a denture in securely, resulting in a loose appliance that sometimes falls out on its own.

Lower dentures sit on the bone ridge, so it’s important to have a certain amount of height and width of bone to hold a lower appliance in place. Lower dentures are even harder to wear than upper ones, because an ideal lower bone ridge is hard to come by. Also, your tongue, lips, and cheek muscles are constantly trying to kick the denture out.

Eating and talking with loose dentures is extremely difficult and often causes sore spots or painful ulcers on your thin gum tissue. A bulky appliance can also impair your speech, producing a lisp and/or making it difficult for you to pronounce certain words.

None of these issues are a concern with All-on-4 implants because the appliance stays in place at all times, and it’s much more streamlined than traditional dentures.

All-on-4-Implants: An Alternative to Individual Implants

Using individual implants to replace each of your missing teeth isn’t necessary. Since implants are so strong, we can pair them together to support the weight of multiple teeth.

Getting individual implants to replace each of your teeth would be quite expensive and very time-consuming. The healing would be longer and more difficult than just placing 4 posts for your All-on-4-implants.

With All-on-4 implants, you get to experience the same natural-looking smile with a faster recovery, better affordability, and less invasive surgery.
