Dealing With Loose Dentures

Having loose dentures can really put a damper on your life. It can keep you from having the confidence to sing as loud as you want or eat the foods that you love.

Knowing what’s causing your denture to be loose will help you determine which solution is best.

A denture may be loose or feel uncomfortable due to the following common reasons:

Lack of Bone Ridge

A denture relies on suction between it and your mouth in order to stay in place. If you have a shallow bone ridge, you may not be getting a good enough seal with your appliance against your gums. This is most common with the lower arch

Strong Facial Muscles, Lips, And Tongue

In addition to the ridge being a problem, some patients have very strong facial muscles in their cheek and lips that cause the denture to get dislodged.  Also, your tongue could be the culprit from why your appliance won’t stay in place. You could subconsciously be popping the denture out with your tongue without realizing it.

Your Denture Is Getting Old

If you have had your prosthetic for a long time and it doesn’t seem to be fitting as snuggly as it used to, that is a sign that your gums have changed shape and shrunk.  This is something that everyone goes through as we age. It can also be due to wearing your appliance at night while you sleep. Dentures should always be removed to allow your mouth some time to rest at night.

The Denture Was Poorly Made

Trusting your smile to just any run of the mill prosthetic facility won’t give you the precise and customized care you deserve. The end product from some less than eager denture clinics will be a loose denture that looks just like everyone else’s.

Dealing with loose dentures can be highly frustrating.  Here are a few tips to help with this dilemma:

Using Denture Adhesive

There are many products available over the counter that can help hold your appliance in place.  Denture adhesive can be found in the form of powders, creams, or even convenient pre-filled strips.  Some do work better than others, but the best one may be based on your individual needs. If you try one kind of adhesive and it doesn’t work, don’t give up too soon.  There may be a product out there that works great for you.

Getting A Realign

If your denture doesn’t fit as tightly as it once did then you might need a new liner on the inside.

During this quick and easy procedure, our Mesa, AZ dentist will place a soft acrylic in your denture, then put the appliance in your mouth.  After a few minutes, the material will have hardened and shaped to every nook and cranny of your mouth. This is essentially like having a new fitting denture and you may be surprised to see what a difference it can make.

Relines are a must if you had teeth taken out prior to getting your denture. As you heal, your appliance will become looser. Once your gums are shaped as they will stay permanently, we can proceed with realigning the inside of your prosthesis.

Incorporating Dental Implants

If denture adhesives and relines don’t help keep your denture in place, then the ultimate solution would be to incorporate some dental implants. These are commonly known as Snap on Dentures or Implant Retained Dentures.

An implant is a titanium post that is inserted within the jaw bone. After placement, it integrates with the bone and becomes fused to it. Hardware that slightly sticks out of the gum is attached to each implant. Inside your denture, you will have “buttons” that snap over the pieces coming from your implant. This results in a great hold and our patients are loving their implant retained dentures in Mesa, AZ!

To qualify for this procedure, we have to make sure that there’s enough bone to place the implants.  The process also takes a while to complete and it is a bit of an investment, but the results are priceless.
